When Styrene is polymerized with Acrylonitrile and 1,3-butadiene, it forms Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). ABS is used in lots of materials, including Lego bricks.
3D Printing of ABS products (like these Legos) can release substantial amounts of styrene.
Styrene is metabolized into Styrene oxide in the body, which can lead to DNA damage and cancer
While some specially marked polystyrene can be microwaved (polystyrene #6) most styrofoam will leech dangerous styrene into your food at high temps.
DO NOT MICROWAVE YOUR CUP OF NOODLES!
Almost all spools of filament can be purchased online for a modest cost. Each filament has unique properties in tensile strength, resistance to oxidation and water, and melting temperature that make each useful for different applications.
